What is up with Cornelia???
This book contains so many references to contentious relationships between the characters, though the most confrontational is probably the relationship between Griet and Cornelia. Why do these two girls not get along together? Have you ever been in a relationship with a person like Cornelia? How did you deal with such a person?

Cornelia is mad because Griet can do what she cant and Griet is the person that is kind of replacing Cornelia because shes is younger nd to do a lot more than Cornelia. Yes I have, and what I did was ignored them.
ReplyDeleteI think that Cornelia strongly resembles her mother, and she was not ready to let another person into her life. In order to prevent Greit from changing her way of life, she acted as if she was not there. She also was rude and mean to try to get Greit to leave their house out of frustration.
ReplyDeleteI think Cornelia was jealous of Griet because shes older than her and she thinks shes more free and open with the world when in reality she really isn't shes just a maid. I have been in a situation like that and what I did was ignore them and became the bigger person.
ReplyDeleteI think Cornelia had a spoiled personality, therefore when Griet was brought into her life she felt as though she would not receive as much attention as she had throughout her entire life. The ideal of 'sharing' her father aggravated Cornelia more so than necessary, and led to Cornelia being rude and ignorant towards Griet. As Cornelia being so cruel would make Griet leave, rather than stay and be miserable. I have dealt with people like Cornelia, but told the person how I felt about their personality, and when they ignored my comments, I ignored them.
ReplyDeleteThey don't get along because they have opposite personalities. Cornelia is cunning and Griet doesn't want to deal with her little pranks. Cornelia is spoiled and doesn't like Griet getting attention. Griet wants to discipline her but that just makes Cornelia like Griet less. I have known someone like this and I just tried to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteI think Cornelia is a lot like her mother. She just wants to cause trouble. She also doesn't like Griet, so she is trying to make her life miserable working for her family. She doesn't like Griet because she could be taking attention away from her. She is spoiled so she thinks she needs to always get her way, and Griet was in the way of that.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading the book, I kind of thought that Cornelia loved Griet, but kind of like she would an older sibling.Cornelia trying to take the earrings from Griet at the end of the novel does not prove that Cornelia hates her. Do you really think that Cornelia would remember Griet at all? Cornelia is like eight or something when Griet is at the house. When Cornelia is a grown woman, she wouldn't remember her in just a few seconds. Cornelia's just mad at Griet for the little things that Griet does that makes her mad, just as you would be mad at an older sibling.
ReplyDeleteI think Cornelia is jealous of Griet because she is coming into her house. I think that at the very beginning when Griet first gets there Cornelia doesn't have a problem with her until Griet tries to tell her what to do and slaps her across the face. Throughout the book Cornelia makes the matter worse by causing trouble for Griet. She breaks her tile, and puts paint on her apron to get Griet caught by Cathrina because she was helping Vermeer. I have had people in my life like that. I just try to avoid them so I don't lose my cool.
ReplyDeleteCornelia was always getting Griet in trouble because she wanted to please her mom. She knew her mother did not like Griet, and she was a hard woman to please. She wanted to be her mother's favorite child or "little sidekick". She also didn't like that Griet slapped her when the first met and she wanted to show Griet that that she was higher that her.
ReplyDeleteI think of Griet and Cornelia's relationship as a very intense sibling rivalry. Cornelia is just like her mother, and wants to be in control of everything that happens to her. Griet is supposed to watch over the children, and Cornelia must see this as a challenge of power. Since Griet is older, she has the power that is normally associated with seniority. But Cornelia has control of her mother and younger siblings. This results in them almost fighting for any amount of power they can get over the other. But they may have gotten along better if it weren't for the incident in the beginning when Griet slapped Cornelia.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Cornelia's issue was that she was a middle child. More often than not, the child born after and before the other children have to fight for attention from others. Cornelia may have seen Griet as another addition to the family and tried to establish a superiority.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Cornelia is a brat. She's turning into her mother slowly. Also I think she was acting out to get attention from her mother and father. Her and her siblings did not get to see or spend time with their father that much, so maybe she's trying to get his attention, but also Catharina's. She could also be trying to get Griet fired because Griet slapped her earlier in the book because she didn't do what Griet told her to do, and that was stay away from the river bank area, because she could fall in.
ReplyDeleteI think cornelia is mad that there is another person in the house. I think she feels there are already a ton of people in her house between all the kids and now another helper. Cornelia wants more attention on her because she is feeling that she isnt getting enough attention and that all the younger kids get all the attention.
