What do the pearl earring symbolize?

We've been discussing symbols, and symbols of power throughout the school year. Without giving too much away, I would love to hear your interpretations as to what the 'pearl earring' means in the story.

How should Griet have handled Van Ruijven?

I think we can all safely agree that Van Ruijven is a bit aggressive when it comes to Griet. How should she have handled handled her relationship with Van Ruijven, knowing that he was so powerful and influential with the Vermeer family?

Should Pieter have married Griet, even though she never loved him?

Oh, such a strange relationship......the one between Griet and Pieter. Does Griet ever love him, truly? Why does he stick with her? Would you have been as patient as Griet?

What is up with Cornelia???

This book contains so many references to contentious relationships between the characters, though the most confrontational is probably the relationship between Griet and Cornelia. Why do these two girls not get along together? Have you ever been in a relationship with a person like Cornelia? How did you deal with such a person?

We started out today's class discussion with this question: Does Vermeer ever LOVE Griet? Which I think is an excellent question. We defined the idea of love, or being in love. We talked about their relationship with each other, including the relationships both had with the other characters in the book. I think a lot of you had wonderful ideas about the question, so I would like to continue this discussion here, on Blogger. So, tell me, does Vermeer ever love Griet? Does Griet LOVE Vermeer? When is the 'turning point' of their relationship???
